Design Tips for Creating a Garden for Children

Grow Local Plant Material

Help children understand their geographical location.

Keep It to a Child's Scale

Use designs which are the same level as the children.
All furniture and artwork should be large enough for adults to use, but small enough for a child to enjoy.

Contain the Area With a Fence

This adds security, keeping the children confined.
This gives the children a feeling of having their own personal space. It's Mine!

Establish a Mini Green World

Make mazes, include arbors with plants on them, use large weeping trees to allow for hiding places.

Include Many Details

Children like things printed in the sidewalks.
They enjoy small shapes throughout, and remember to always print when something is written.

Include Interactive Displays

Use pathways that allow the children to wander through the gardens. This encourages them to take part.

Use Common Names

Always remember to use big print, and upper and lower case print.
Keep the sentences simple, always keep it under a third grade reading level.

Use Bright Colors

Use paint to paint the sidewalks, arches and arbors.

Make Plant Connection with the Childrens' Daily Lives

Children like to learn about where their food comes from.
They enjoy learning about the environment that we live in everyday.

Keep Gardens Open for All Ages & Abilities

Gardens must have pathways large enough for wheelchairs, walkers, canes and strollers.
Provide drinking water, and family bathrooms that include diaper changing stations.
